A 19-year-old UK-born Ghanaian woman, Daniella KanKam-Adu, has avoided a jail sentence after attempting to smuggle 22.5kg of cannabis worth £225,000 from Canada to the UK.
The young woman, who is pregnant and based in Queens Road, London, was intercepted at Newcastle Airport on March 3, 2025. Border Force officers found the Class B drugs hidden in her luggage after she claimed it contained vapes. She admitted to smuggling the drugs in exchange for £250, which she intended to use as part of a deposit for a home.
Although KanKam-Adu initially claimed she had packed her own bags, she became defensive during checks and could not open one of the locked suitcases. Upon forcing it open, officers discovered the substantial quantity of cannabis inside.
KanKam-Adu pleaded guilty to evading the prohibition on drug importation. She told the court a friend had persuaded her to bring what she thought were untaxed vapes from Canada. Realizing the luggage contained drugs due to its weight, she still returned, desperate for money and already in possession of a return ticket.
Her defense lawyer, Glenn Gatland, described her as “naive” and explained that she had endured a difficult upbringing, including time in a care home. He also revealed she had recently suffered a miscarriage while on remand.
Considering her age, background, and time already spent in custody, the court chose not to impose a prison sentence.
