Pope Francis has been discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after a five-week stay, during which he faced two life-threatening health episodes, doctors revealed.

Appearing at his hospital window before leaving, the 88-year-old pontiff offered a blessing to the crowd gathered outside. Dr. Sergio Alfieri, one of his treating physicians, confirmed that although Pope Francis is not yet fully recovered, he no longer has pneumonia and will need at least two months of rest at the Vatican.

Despite the severity of his condition, the Pope was never intubated and remained conscious and alert throughout his hospitalization. Doctors say that if his recovery continues without complications, he will gradually return to work.

His discharge was met with relief and joy from well-wishers. Rome’s Mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, described it as “a great gift to the city and the world,” while Bishop Larry Kulick from Pennsylvania expressed his happiness at seeing the Pope’s improved condition.

During his time in the hospital, Pope Francis made only one public appearance through a Vatican-released photograph showing him praying in a chapel. Earlier this month, an audio recording of him was played in St. Peter’s Square, where he thanked the faithful for their prayers despite his breathless voice.

The Pope, who has led the Roman Catholic Church for 12 years, has a history of health issues, including the removal of part of his lung at age 21, which has made him more susceptible to infections.

Now back at the Vatican, he will focus on his recovery while continuing his spiritual leadership.
