Pope Francis, the 266th head of the Roman Catholic Church and one of the most influential religious leaders of the 21st century, has died at the age of 88. The Vatican confirmed his passing at 7:35 a.m. local time on Monday, April 21, following a prolonged illness linked to pneumonia and related complications.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis made history in 2013 when he became the first Jesuit, first Latin American, and first non-European pope in over a millennium. His papacy was marked by a strong commitment to church reform, social justice, climate advocacy, and interfaith dialogue.

Known for his humility, compassion, and progressive views, Francis often challenged longstanding church traditions, advocating for a more inclusive and merciful Catholic Church. Despite ongoing health challenges, he made a final public appearance on Easter Sunday, delivering a blessing from St. Peter’s Basilica.

With his death, the Catholic Church enters the sede vacante period. The College of Cardinals will convene in the coming days to elect a new pope — a decision likely influenced by Francis’ own appointees, who now make up the majority of voting members.

According to Vatican officials, Pope Francis will be buried in a simple wooden casket, in line with his personal wishes for modesty and humility.
