Presidential candidates and political parties contesting the December 7 elections have signed a peace pact to guarantee a smooth and violence-free electoral process.
The Electoral Commission (EC) encouraged all parties to uphold peace and accept the election results. Chairperson Jean Mensa assured Ghanaians of robust measures in place for a free, fair, and transparent election. Speaking at the 4th Presidential Election Peace Pact signing in Accra on Thursday, November 28, she called for public confidence in the process and underscored the significance of maintaining a peaceful environment.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, appealed to all stakeholders, including political parties, the media, and security agencies, to uphold peace before, during, and after the elections. He highlighted Ghana’s strong democratic history and urged for continued unity.
However, National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama raised concerns about the lack of accountability for those who incite violence, warning that such inaction weakens public confidence in peace pacts. He stressed the need for peace agreements to be matched with prompt enforcement actions to maintain their relevance.
The pact reaffirms the commitment of all parties to ensure a peaceful election season, with calls for collective responsibility in preserving Ghana’s democratic stability.
