The Ghana Police Service has launched a manhunt for a man captured in a viral video allegedly giving a substance believed to be a cigarette to a child. In a statement released on Friday, November 21, the police said efforts are underway to identify and arrest the suspect, while ensuring the safety and protection of the child involved.
The Police Service is urging members of the public with any information regarding the identities or whereabouts of the man or the child to report to the nearest police station.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection has strongly condemned the act, describing it as a clear case of child endangerment. The Ministry reminded the public that exposing children to harmful substances constitutes abuse and violates the child’s rights and dignity.
In its statement, the Ministry noted that the act breaches provisions of the Children’s Act, 1998 (Act 560), which guarantees the protection of every child from physical, psychological, and moral harm. It also undermines the goals of the Early Childhood Care and Development Policy, which promotes the holistic growth of children in safe and nurturing environments.
Both the Police Service and the Ministry have assured the public of their commitment to safeguarding children and ensuring that those who endanger minors face the full rigour of the law.
