The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohonu, says the Police Professional Standards Bureau is intensifying investigations into the violent disturbance that occurred at the Kwahu Abene Palace on Monday, November 17.
The attack happened around 4 a.m. when armed men, dressed in uniforms resembling those of the police and claiming to be National Security operatives, stormed the Palace of the Paramount Chief of the Kwahu Traditional Council. They allegedly arrested the Kwahuhemaa, Nana Adwoa Gyemfua.
Residents reported hearing gunshots inside the palace before the Queen Mother was taken away. The attackers also seized the official Toyota Land Cruiser of the Kwahuhene, which tracking information shows is currently headed toward Accra.
This update follows a visit by a delegation from the Kwahu Traditional Council to the IGP at the police headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, November 26, where they presented a petition calling for swift action.
According to the IGP, statements have already been taken from individuals connected to the incident, and the police remain committed to conducting a thorough investigation to restore peace and stability in the area.
Speaking on behalf of the IGP, the Head of Corporate Affairs for the Ghana Police Service, DCOP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, urged chiefs and residents to stay calm as investigations continue.
“Investigations are ongoing; we will let the Palace know the outcome of the investigation,” she assured.
Representing the Traditional Council, the Kwahu Adontenghene and Chief of Abetifi, Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III, commended the IGP and the police leadership for their support and expressed confidence that justice will be served.
