The Ashanti Regional Police Command has begun investigations into a tragic sh.ooting incident that occurred in Nyinahin, located in the Atwima Mponua District, resulting in one death and three injuries.
The incident took place around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 24, 2025, during a funeral in the community. According to police reports, tensions flared when military officers in a passing truck confronted a mourner who was dressed in military camouflage.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the soldiers attempted to forcibly remove the attire, leading to a heated exchange. During the scuffle, a soldier allegedly sh.ot the mourner in the head, killing him instantly. The deceased has been identified as Akwasi Lala, also known as Kushivi.
Following the fatal shooting, the situation escalated, prompting the soldiers to fire warning shots to prevent a possible mob attack. However, three more individuals were struck and injured. They were rushed to the Nyinahin Government Hospital, with one of them later transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for advanced treatment.
Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, has since visited both the scene and the victims in the hospital. He assured the public of a thorough investigation and promised that anyone found culpable will face the full rigour of the law.
The police are also in discussions with the Central Military Command to facilitate the release of the involved military personnel to aid in the ongoing investigation.
