Police in the Volta Region have intercepted a fuel tanker loaded not with petrol, but with cocoa beans, in what is suspected to be an attempt to smuggle the commodity into neighbouring Togo.
The vehicle, bearing registration number GN 3801-13, was traveling from Madina in Accra to Jasikan when it was stopped in the Peki enclave on Tuesday, May 13, following a tip-off.
Upon inspection, the tanker was found to be filled with large quantities of cocoa beans instead of fuel. The driver, whose name is being withheld, has been granted bail and is assisting police with ongoing investigations.
A police spokesman told on Saturday, May 17, revealed that the seized cocoa beans have been handed over to the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) for safekeeping and further action.
Authorities have launched a manhunt for the owner of the tanker, believed to be the mastermind behind the smuggling attempt.
