The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has disclosed that several police officers stationed in the Bawku enclave have threatened to resign if their transfer requests are not approved.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, the Minister said the development follows escalating insecurity in the area, where some officers, including those manning checkpoints, have been shot and killed over the past three months.
Muntaka noted that the situation has created fear among security personnel, with some indicating they would rather resign than continue serving in the area under current conditions.
“I have had instances where some officers say that if you don’t transfer me from that area, I will rather resign. Why? Because the citizens themselves over there are not helpful. To the extent that people have the courage to go and openly fire at police officers and kill them at the checkpoints. At a point in time, the IGP had to withdraw all police officers from checkpoints,” he stated.
The Minister explained that he opposed the withdrawal of officers and instead recommended reinforcing them with armored vehicles to ensure their safety while maintaining security operations.
“I had to insist that the answer is not to withdraw but rather position them with armored vehicles. As MPs, we need to work with these security people so that we will be able to create an enabling environment within the area so they can assist and help us,” he added.
Muntaka further appealed to Members of Parliament from affected communities to collaborate with security agencies to help restore calm and create a safer environment for officers to perform their duties effectively.
