The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has visited Gbiniyiri in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region following violent clashes over land ownership that claimed six lives and left 18 others injured over the weekend.
Accompanied by top security officers, the IGP met with chiefs, opinion leaders, and community stakeholders as part of efforts to restore peace and stability in the troubled community.
Women and children were reported fleeing the area as tension heightened after the clashes, which also left several properties destroyed.
To maintain order, the Ghana Police Service has deployed 300 personnel from Accra to Gbiniyiri, Sawla, Giniri, and adjoining communities.
Earlier, Mr. Yohuno met with the Savannah Regional Security Council, chaired by Regional Minister Salisu Be-Awuribe, for a briefing on the situation. He also visited the Jakpa Palace, where he appealed to the Overlord of Gonjaland, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, to help facilitate dialogue between the feuding factions.
The IGP assured that the security forces would do everything possible to restore calm, noting that such violent incidents had not been recorded in Gonjaland for a very long time.
In response, the Yagbonwura pledged his support in resolving the matter peacefully and appealed to the youth to lay down their weapons and seek lawful avenues to address their grievances.
Police say investigations are ongoing, while six suspects arrested in connection with the clashes have been granted bail.
