The Ghana Police Service has dismantled two suspected robbery gangs in separate intelligence-led operations in the Ashanti Region, resulting in one death and one arrest.
According to the Ashanti South Regional Police Command, the operations were carried out at Krofrom and Mamponteng, near Kumasi, as part of ongoing efforts to combat criminal activity in the region.
Speaking at a media briefing in Bekwai, the Ashanti South Regional Commander, Joseph Hammond Nyaaba, disclosed that the first operation took place on March 26 and led to the death of 27-year-old suspect Muniru Ali.
Police say the suspect attempted to flee upon spotting officers and engaged them in a gun battle, during which he sustained gunshot wounds. He was later transported to hospital but died while receiving treatment. Preliminary investigations indicated that he had admitted involvement in multiple robbery incidents across the region.
In a separate operation on March 28, officers arrested Osmanu Razak, a 28-year-old alleged gang leader, at Mamponteng. Razak is reported to have confessed to participating in several robbery activities in the Ashanti Region.
Police say investigations are ongoing as authorities intensify efforts to dismantle criminal networks and enhance security in the region.
