‎The Ghana Police Service has issued a directive banning the movement of its personnel and their families in Binduri, Bawku, Pusiga, and Garu following a surge in violent incidents in the area.

‎A police wireless message signed by ACP J. W. Darison cited a “dangerous development” in Bawku and its surrounding districts, where personnel and their families have reportedly become targets of unknown assailants. The message emphasized the need for urgent compliance and warned that all movement—whether by indigenes or non-indigenes, including family members has been suspended in the affected areas.

‎“Personnel deployed on operational duties in these areas should ensure they put on appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and are under armoured escort,” the directive added.

‎This decision follows a gruesome attack in Binduri near Atuba, where a man was shot and killed by unknown gunmen. The attackers reportedly set the victim’s body and motorcycle ablaze after the killing. Although the motive remains unclear, initial reports link the incident to the ongoing Bawku chieftaincy conflict, which has recently seen renewed violence.

‎The development comes less than 24 hours after a visit by the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to the Bawku Naba, Asigri Abugrago Azoka II. The IGP called for collaboration between traditional authorities and security agencies to restore calm in the area, assuring neutrality and professionalism from the police.

‎In response to the recent unrest, the Bawku chapter of the Mamprugu Youth Association (MAYA) condemned the attack and urged the government to beef up security in Binduri. The group also recommended restrictions on motorbike use and called on Binduri MP, Mahmoud Issifu, to take decisive action to address the escalating tensions.
