The Ghana Police Service has announced that arrests will soon be made in connection with the violence that erupted during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun held on Friday, July 11, 2025.
The assurance comes after investigators reportedly gathered “vital leads” by reviewing multiple video footages and collecting statements from victims and eyewitnesses. The incident took place at the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling station and briefly disrupted voting activities before order was restored.
Among those affected by the chaos was former Fisheries Minister, Hawa Koomson, who was allegedly attacked by unidentified individuals.
In a press release issued on Thursday, July 17, and signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs at the Accra Regional Police Command, the service disclosed that the investigation was progressing steadily.
“The command has progressed to obtain statements from complainants and witnesses to aid in the ongoing investigations,” the statement said. “The Police have also gathered vital leads and wish to assure the public that arrests will be effected soon. Meanwhile, the victims involved in the incidents have been issued with Police Medical Report Forms.”
The police urged the public to cooperate and provide credible information to support the investigation.
In a related development, the officer who was captured on video assaulting a journalist during the rerun has been interdicted. He is now facing criminal charges for assault, according to the police.
The statement reaffirmed the Police Service’s commitment to maintaining law and order, especially during electoral processes, and vowed to bring to justice anyone found guilty of violence, intimidation, or misconduct.
