Three men have been arrested in the Wa West District of the Upper West Region after being found in possession of firearms and offensive weapons, raising concerns about public safety in the area.

The suspects were arrested on Monday, February 3, 2026, during a routine patrol by officers of the Ghana Police Service at Goziri, a community near Vieri. According to police, the patrol team encountered about five men openly carrying weapons.

Upon sighting the police vehicle, the suspects attempted to flee. However, three of them were arrested after a brief chase. They were identified as Yahaya Samata, aged 27; Adams Alhassan, aged 37; and Yiritang Boosi, aged 35.

A search conducted at the scene led to the retrieval of three single-barrel guns, three cutlasses and twenty-three BB cartridges. During interrogation, the suspects admitted that they did not possess valid licences to carry the firearms and ammunition.

They were remanded into police custody and are expected to reappear before the court on February 18, 2026, as investigations continue. Police are also working to apprehend the remaining suspects who managed to escape.

The Upper West Regional Police Command has issued a caution to the public, particularly individuals in possession of unlicensed firearms, to regularise their documentation or voluntarily surrender such weapons in accordance with the law.
