The Ghana Police Service has arrested one suspect in connection with the tragic death of Joana Deladem Yabani, a final-year Biological Science student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
According to a police statement, the lifeless body of the 21-year-old student was discovered in the early hours of February 27, 2025, behind the Central Laboratory on the KNUST campus. Medical authorities at KNUST Hospital confirmed her death at the scene, after which the body was transported to the morgue for preservation and an autopsy.
Preliminary investigations revealed visible marks of violence on the deceased, leading law enforcement officials to suspect foul play. The police subsequently arrested Daniel Tuffour, a fellow student, who was found in possession of clothing worn during the crime. He is currently in police custody, assisting with further investigations.
KNUST authorities, in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, have heightened campus security in response to the tragic incident. The university’s management has assured students and staff that measures are being taken to prevent such occurrences, including increasing police patrols and surveillance. Over 50 police officers, along with additional security personnel, have been deployed across campus to enhance safety.
The Inspector-General of Police has personally engaged the family of the deceased, offering condolences and assuring them of a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.
Meanwhile, KNUST students have been urged to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety by avoiding isolated areas at night, walking in groups, and promptly reporting any suspicious activity.
