The Upper West Regional Police Command has confirmed the arrest of four students in connection with the violent disturbances that broke out at the Wa Technical Institute.
Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, described the incident as a serious act of misconduct that resulted in extensive damage to school property. Speaking to Channel One TV, he explained that the chaos began after some students resisted routine internal disciplinary measures.
According to him, school authorities had repeatedly warned students against the use of unauthorised uniforms and mobile phones on campus. However, a group of students defied these rules and became aggressive when disciplinary action was taken.
The situation escalated rapidly, leading to the vandalism of school property. Six vehicles on the compound were damaged, while window panes at the administration block and the multi-purpose hall were shattered during the unrest.
DCOP Yiribaare noted that police officers arrived promptly after receiving reports of the disturbances and restored calm.
He also revealed that police are investigating the school’s domestic bursar after food items belonging to the institution were allegedly found in her possession. Should she be found culpable, the case will be forwarded to court.
Providing an update on a separate incident on December 5 at Saawie, the commander said officers responding to a complaint were allegedly attacked and disarmed by some youth. Police reinforcements later arrested nine suspects. Seven have since been arraigned, while two were released after interrogation.
