
The Eastern South Regional Police Command has arrested 10 suspects and retrieved nine weapons in separate operations at Akwatia, as part of ongoing security measures ahead of the upcoming by-election in the Eastern Region.
The seized weapons include eight pump-action guns and one locally manufactured single-barrel gun. Police say the operations are part of efforts to curb the unlawful possession and use of firearms during the electoral process.
On August 22, 2025, police intercepted a vehicle near St. Dominic Hospital in Akwatia, driven by suspect Bernard Kumi Ofosu. A search uncovered a Tulpar double-barrel pump-action gun, four AAA live cartridges, and two FTB blank cartridges. Though the suspect produced a valid license, he has been detained while the exhibits undergo verification.
At the Akwatia Y-Junction snap check, police arrested Joshua Amenuku after finding 15 live BB cartridges on him. A follow-up search at his residence led to the discovery of an ADLER TULPA pump-action gun and five more cartridges.
Later that evening, a Toyota Hilux pick-up was intercepted at the Boadua Livingstone snap check point. The occupants, Enoch Asiedu and Lu Youyan, a Chinese national, were arrested after four live BB cartridges were found in the vehicle. The ammunition is alleged to belong to their employer, identified only as Mohammed, who is currently being pursued by police.
On August 23, 2025, another suspect, Pieterson Joseph, was arrested at the Boadua Livingstone Junction snap check point after police retrieved an ADLER TULPAR pump-action gun and 46 AAA and BB cartridges from his vehicle. He admitted ownership of the firearm.
That same day, officers at Staff Village Boadua intercepted a Toyota Tundra pick-up with registration number WR 5535-13. A search revealed three pump-action guns, including a Pardus and a Hulglu Atroe. The driver, Stephen Nkansah, claimed ownership of two guns, while stating the third belonged to his chief. He was arrested and remains in custody.
The Eastern South Regional Police Command has assured the public and stakeholders that security operations will be intensified to maintain peace and order before, during, and after the Akwatia by-election.
