Police Allegedly Kill Three During Clash with Illegal Miners at Acherensua

Three individuals have reportedly been shot dead by police officers at Acherensua in the Ahafo Region during an operation targeting illegal mining activities.

The victims were among a group of eight people who allegedly entered the Newmont Ahafo South mines to conduct illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening around 7:00 PM when the group reportedly tried to flee upon spotting the police. According to eyewitness accounts, the officers pursued the individuals and fired shots, leading to the deaths of three and leaving five others with gunshot injuries.

The injured are currently receiving treatment at a nearby medical facility, while the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the St. Elizabeth Hospital mortuary.

Following the incident, tensions have escalated in Acherensua, with local youth staging protests. Demonstrators have blocked major roads in the area, demanding justice for the victims and accountability for the actions of the police.

Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the incident, but calls for an investigation into the matter continue to grow as the community grapples with the tragic events.
