A light aircraft carrying 12 passengers has crashed near Kenya’s coastal region of Kwale, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has confirmed.
According to a statement issued by the KCAA, the plane, operated by Mombasa Air Services, was en route from the coastal town of Diani to Kichwa Tembo, a popular safari resort in the Maasai Mara, when it went down around 5:30 a.m. local time (02:30 GMT) on Tuesday.
Kenyan police sources told local media that several tourists were among those on board, though details of casualties are yet to be officially confirmed.
Images shared by Kenyan media outlets showed the aircraft engulfed in flames, with wreckage and debris scattered across the crash site. Security personnel and emergency response teams have since secured the area to facilitate rescue and recovery operations.
The KCAA noted that multiple government agencies are currently at the scene, working to determine the cause of the crash and assess the extent of damage.
The aircraft, identified by its registration number 5Y-CCA, reportedly lost contact with air traffic control shortly before the crash. Authorities are expected to release further updates as investigations progress.
