St. Augustine’s College student Ampiah Gilbert, a physically challenged high jumper, is set to represent Ghana at the 2025 Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan International Para Athletics Meeting in Marrakech, Morocco.

The 17-year-old’s journey to international competition began with a remarkable personal best of 1.60m in 2023, where he outperformed able-bodied athletes in Ekumfi Atwa. His story gained national attention through a viral 3Sports documentary by Bill Eshun, which later earned Eshun the Disability Reporter of the Year award at the 2024 Ghana Journalists Association Awards.

Despite receiving numerous offers from other secondary schools, Gilbert chose to continue his academic and athletic journey at St. Augustine’s College (AUGUSCO), a school known for producing top-tier athletes like Michael Essien, Matthew Amoah, and sprinter Ibrahim Fuseini.

At AUGUSCO, Gilbert raised eyebrows after clearing 1.86m at the school’s inter-house competition, winning over many skeptics. During the recent Cape Coast super zonals, he participated in a non-scoring high jump event, clearing 1.50m but narrowly missing 1.78m. His impressive form earned him a call-up to Team Ghana for the prestigious 9th edition of the Para Athletics Meeting.

Gilbert will travel to Morocco on April 20 with teammates Govina Edmund and Issah Zinabu. He will undergo athlete classification from April 21–23 before competing in the men’s high jump and long jump events. The 2025 Marrakech WPA Grand Prix begins on April 24 and will run for three days.
