Parliament to Introduce Use of Local Languages on the Floor

In a move to promote Ghanaian culture and prevent the extinction of local languages, Parliament has announced plans to allow the use of local languages on the floor of the House. According to Order 63 of the new Standing Orders, Members of Parliament (MPs) will be permitted to use any local language, with interpretation and translation provided for all members to understand.

This initiative is set to begin during the second meeting of the fourth session of the Eighth Parliament, following the necessary preparations, including the provision of translators and appropriate gadgets.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, confirmed that the new measure would take effect after the Easter break, barring any unforeseen challenges.

The issue of preserving local languages was highlighted during a recent session, with the Second Deputy Minority Leader, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, presenting a statement advocating for the promotion and preservation of the Nzema language. Mr. Buah expressed concern over the declining interest in teaching and learning the language in educational institutions, despite its inclusion in the curriculum.

In response to these concerns, the Speaker referred the statement to the committees on Education, Culture, Tourism, and Finance for further consideration. The aim is to explore the possibility of introducing local languages in basic schools, promoting Ghanaian culture and tourism, and assessing the financial implications.

This initiative is part of Parliament’s broader efforts to implement new Standing Orders introduced at the beginning of the current session. These include a daily roll call of members and the recitation of the national pledge, aimed at enhancing credibility, discipline, and patriotism among MPs.
