Parliament has summoned the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, and the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, to appear before the House next week following the tragic drowning of seven Lawra Senior High School students.

The incident occurred on June 13, 2025, as the students attempted to cross the Black Volta, highlighting the dire need for life jackets in communities reliant on water transport.

During a session on Tuesday, June 17, Second Deputy Speaker Andrew Asiamah Amoako supported a motion by Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor for the ministers to address the House. He emphasized the urgency of the matter and proposed a budget review to allocate emergency funds to the Interior Ministry.

“This is very critical. If we can review the Interior Ministry’s budget and allocate resources for such emergencies, it will save lives,” he stated.

Energy Minister Jinapor was also summoned due to the relevance of the Volta River and the impact of energy-related infrastructure on communities in the area.

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Lawra, Bede Ziedeng, has called on NADMO, the Regional Coordinating Council, and the Lawra Municipal Assembly to supply life jackets immediately. He also pledged to personally donate ten life jackets to the affected communities.

“I appeal to NADMO and other local authorities to assist Lawra SHS and the grieving families. Parliament must act now to prevent similar tragedies,” Ziedeng urged.
