The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has raised concerns over the appointment of Dr. Callistus Mahama as the Executive Secretary to the President, highlighting a lack of formal communication with Parliament regarding the decision.
Dr. Mahama’s appointment was made by President John Dramani Mahama on January 6, 2025, and officially took effect on January 7, 2025. However, Afenyo-Markin, speaking during the vetting of Finance Minister-designate Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson on January 13, 2025, expressed dissatisfaction with the process, calling out what he described as a breach of governance protocols.
“Parliament is not even aware of your appointment,” Afenyo-Markin remarked. “Under normal circumstances, the President is supposed to communicate to Parliament. It’s part of the imperatives of governance that he communicates to Parliament.”
The Minority Leader stressed the importance of adherence to established procedures in appointments to key positions. He noted that such communication is vital for ensuring transparency and accountability in governance.
Afenyo-Markin further called on President Mahama to expedite the formation of his cabinet to ensure smooth governmental operations. He underscored the urgency of having a fully functional executive team to address national priorities effectively.
