The men’s 100m, one of the most highly-anticipated events at the Olympic Games, began with heats on Saturday morning.
Ghana’s Benjamin Azamati competed in the first heat, running in lane 6. He placed second, following Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson, who currently holds the world-leading time of 9.77 seconds this year.
The heat started with some drama as Great Britain’s Jeremiah Azu was disqualified for a false start. Despite Azu’s protests to the officials, the decision was upheld, and he was escorted off the track.
In the race, Thompson won heat one with a time of 10 seconds flat, followed by Azamati, who finished in 10.08 seconds. Cuba’s Reynaldo Espinosa came in third.
In another heat, Ghana’s Abdul Rashid Saminu placed third in Heat 5, marking a strong showing for Ghanaian athletes in the 100m event.
