At least 1,000 people have been confirmed dead after a massive landslide struck Tarasin village near the Marra mountains in Sudan’s Western Darfur region, flattening the entire community, according to the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM).
The disaster occurred on Sunday, burying homes and residents under tons of earth. Reports indicate that only one person survived the catastrophe, underscoring its devastating scale.
The SLM has urgently appealed to the United Nations and international aid organisations to support ongoing search and rescue efforts.
The Marra mountains, already notorious for their harsh terrain and history of violence and displacement linked to the region’s prolonged conflict, now face an added humanitarian crisis.
“This tragedy has compounded the suffering of an already vulnerable community,” the group said in a statement, stressing the urgent need for emergency relief, medical aid, and recovery assistance.
As rescue teams continue operations, global humanitarian organisations are being urged to mobilise quickly to provide food, shelter, and medical support to survivors and affected families.
The incident highlights both the fragile living conditions in conflict zones and the pressing need for stronger disaster preparedness and response systems to protect at-risk communities.
