Renowned broadcaster and social commentator, Okatakyie Afrifra-Mensah, has reportedly been arrested by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB). Sources indicate that he was picked up at Mile 7, Achimota, on Wednesday evening under unclear circumstances.
Afrifra-Mensah, known for his strong political opinions and criticism of the government, has been vocal on various national issues. His alleged arrest has sparked concerns about press freedom and political interference in media activities.
The news of his detention was confirmed by Henry Nana Boakye, the National Organizer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). In a Facebook post, Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, described the arrest as an attempt to silence the media under the administration of President John Dramani Mahama. He wrote, “The NIB picking Okatakyie Afrifra-Mensah is a clear culture of silence by the Mahama-led administration. The NDC is doing everything possible to make sure they silence the media.”
As of now, there has been no official statement from the NIB regarding the reason for the journalist’s arrest. The development has triggered reactions from political figures, media practitioners, and the general public, with many calling for his immediate release.
