Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has confirmed that Benjamin Asare is currently Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper following his outstanding performances in training and the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.
The Hearts of Oak shot-stopper has been instrumental in Ghana’s campaign, keeping two clean sheets in his first two games as the national team’s goalkeeper.
Speaking after Ghana’s 3-0 victory over Madagascar, Addo acknowledged Asare’s consistency and form.
“At this point, the next game is in June, but at the moment, I think he [Benjamin Asare] is number one. We have decided on him. He did well in training,” Addo said.
However, the head coach emphasized that competition for the position remains fierce, with Lawrence Ati Zigi and Joe Wollacott still pushing for a starting role.
Addo highlighted the depth in Ghana’s goalkeeping department, noting that Asare’s rise to the top has been supported by the commitment and professionalism of his fellow goalkeepers.
“It’s not that there’s a huge gap between him and the other goalkeepers. We have a good situation where they are pushing each other. Ati Zigi and Wollacott have also been supportive, and I don’t take that for granted,” he stated.
He further praised Asare’s work ethic, emphasizing that his performances in the Ghana Premier League and national team training sessions justified his selection as the Black Stars’ number one.
With Ghana’s next World Cup qualifier scheduled for June, Asare’s status as the team’s preferred goalkeeper will be closely monitored in the coming months.
