In a tragic incident that occurred on October 19, 2023, a violent clash between youth groups in the Pankrono and Ahwiaa Adabraka communities, both located within the Kwabre East Municipalities of the Ashanti region, resulted in one casualty and the arrest of three individuals.
This confrontation had been brewing for some time, with the underlying causes still shrouded in mystery. Pankrono and Adabraka, neighboring communities separated only by a junction, have had a history of simmering tensions.
The situation took a deadly turn after a friendly football match hosted by Pankrono on October 18, 2023, between their youth groups and those from Adabraka. Pankrono emerged as the victor in the match, but the situation took a grim turn when supporters of the visiting team engaged in a post-match rampage.
According to reports, as these supporters were returning to their community via Pankrono Market, a 27-year-old named Kwame Owusu was allegedly attacked and fatally stabbed with a sharp object, suspected to be a pair of scissors, around 6:30 p.m. The assailants swiftly fled the scene, leaving Owusu severely injured. He was rushed to the Tafo Government Hospital but, tragically, succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
News of Kwame Owusu’s death triggered outrage among the youth of Pankrono, who sought retribution. Swift action was imperative to prevent a potential violent clash and further bloodshed. The Tafo-Pankrono Police Division, supported by colleagues from Mamponteng, deployed a significant police presence under the command of Divisional Commander ACP Stephen Kwakye to defuse the tension.
During a visit to the deceased’s family, mourners and well-wishers gathered to pay their respects. Madam Ama Afreh, the mother of the deceased, expressed her devastation, mentioning that her son, Kwame Owusu, had been set to depart Kumasi for Qatar, making his untimely demise all the more tragic.
A follow-up visit to Adabraka revealed a substantial police presence working to maintain peace. Evidence of property damage caused by the irate youth was apparent, with victims like automobile lubricant dealer Amadu Mumuni reporting not only destruction of his merchandise but also the theft of his sales from Tuesday until the morning of the incident.
This unfortunate incident underscores the pressing need for measures to address the simmering tensions between the youth of Pankrono and Ahwiaa Adabraka, as the community grapples with the loss of one of its own.
