One person has been confirmed dead, with several others sustaining injuries, following a head-on collision involving a VIP bus and a Toyota Prado at Akyem Sekyere on the Accra–Kumasi Highway.
The accident occurred at dawn on Thursday, April 2, 2026, and caused major traffic disruption along one of Ghana’s busiest road corridors. According to the Ghana Police Service, the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) immediately diverted traffic through the Apedwa and Asiakwa sections to ease congestion and support emergency operations.
Police say the injured victims have been rushed to nearby health facilities where they are currently receiving treatment. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased or the injured.
The crash led to severe gridlock, leaving many travellers stranded for hours, especially as Easter travel traffic builds across the country. Motorists travelling from Accra toward Kumasi have been advised to reroute through Kyebi from the Apedwa stretch, while those coming from Kumasi are being redirected through Asiakwa to reconnect with the main highway at Apedwa.
Police and other emergency agencies are currently working to remove the accident vehicles from the roadway and restore normal traffic flow.
