The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has launched an investigation into five fuel companies over alleged financial irregularities and suspected tax evasion.

In a statement issued on April 7, the OSP named the companies under investigation as Platon Oil and Gas Ltd, Sentuo Oil, Akwaaba Oil, Sahara Oil and Gas Ltd, and Chase Petroleum Ghana Ltd.

According to the anti-corruption body, the probe is focused on allegations of under-declaration of petroleum imports, falsification of product classifications during depot transfers, and deliberate evasion of taxes.

The investigation also points to possible collusion between some Bulk Distribution Companies (BDCs) and officials from key state institutions, including the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), and the National Security Secretariat (NSS).

Preliminary findings suggest that intermediaries may have been used to facilitate illicit financial transactions between private operators and public officials.

The OSP disclosed that court-authorised searches have already been conducted at fuel depots and offices linked to the companies involved. During the operations, investigators seized documents and electronic materials considered relevant to the case.

Several persons of interest are currently in custody assisting with investigations, as authorities work to uncover the full scope of the alleged scheme.
