Ongoing Demonstration Demands Bank of Ghana Governor’s Resignation Over Alleged Reckless Use of State Funds

In a dramatic display of public discontent, a sizable demonstration organized by Ghana’s political minority is currently underway in Accra. Protesters have gathered in front of the Obra Spot, demanding the resignation of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), citing alleged reckless use of state funds as their primary grievance.

Prominent figures from Ghana’s political landscape have joined the throngs of demonstrators, underlining the significance of the event. Among those present are Tamale South Member of Parliament (MP) Haruna Iddrisu, Madina MP Francis Xavier Sosu, Akudzato Ablakwa, Sam George, and Hon. Bede Ziendeng.

The protest has garnered a wide range of voices, with participants and key figures alike expressing their dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs. Nana Ama Browne Klutse, one of the protesters, succinctly stated, “The only language Prez. Akufo-Addo understands is ‘Demonstration,'” alluding to their belief that peaceful demonstrations are the most effective way to communicate their concerns to the government.

Xavier Sosu, MP for Madina Constituency, echoed this sentiment, declaring, “If we do not talk, Ghana will be destroyed.” He emphasized the urgency of addressing the alleged mismanagement of state funds.

Aishatu Ibrahim, another demonstrator, conveyed the hardship experienced by many Ghanaians, stating, “I am demonstrating today because our leaders are not using our monies for useful things. We are suffering!” Her words reflect the economic concerns that have fueled this protest.

The demonstration organizers have been keen to emphasize that the event transcends political affiliations. NDC Women’s Organizer from Odododiodio constituency clarified, “#OccupyBoGProtest demonstration is not about any political party. It is about the wellbeing of the country.”

One protester summed up the prevailing sentiment, asserting, “Ghana is in a mess under the Akufo-Addo led government.” This sentiment has resonated with the gathered crowd, which continues to grow as more people join the demonstration.

As the demonstration unfolds, tensions remain high, and the demands for accountability in the use of state funds are becoming increasingly vocal. It remains to be seen how the government will respond to these calls for change, but today’s events have made it clear that a significant portion of the Ghanaian populace is demanding action.
