Rev. John Ntim Fordjour has criticised President John Dramani Mahama over recent remarks suggesting that the proposed anti-LGBTQ+ legislation is not among Ghana’s most pressing national concerns.

The comments by the President were made during an engagement with civil society organisations at Jubilee House in Accra on March 30, where he emphasised that while the bill is important, the country faces more urgent challenges.

“I explained during my recent engagement with the World Affairs Council that it is not the most important issue we face as a nation. We are still grappling with the provision of basic needs such as education, healthcare, jobs, food, clothing, and shelter,” President Mahama stated.

However, speaking in an interview, Rev. Ntim Fordjour, a key sponsor of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, expressed disappointment in the President’s position, arguing that it undermines the significance many Ghanaians attach to the legislation.

He described the remarks as troubling and suggested they reflect a lack of commitment to the bill, which has generated widespread public debate in recent years.

Rev. Ntim Fordjour further compared the situation to previous administrations, stating that similar comments from former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo would have triggered strong public backlash.

“If this statement had come from President Akufo-Addo between 2021 and 2024, all hell would have broken loose,” he said.

He also questioned what he described as the silence of key stakeholders, including religious and traditional leaders, who had previously been vocal on the issue.

“My question is: Where are the communal bodies? Where are the faith-based organisations? Where are the imams, the pastors, the traditional rulers, the CSOs who spoke strongly in 2024?” he asked.

The debate surrounding the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill continues to spark differing opinions across Ghana, highlighting broader tensions between governance priorities and social policy concerns.
