The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced the suspension of internal elections in disputed polling stations as part of newly revised guidelines aimed at strengthening transparency and fairness in its grassroots electoral process.
The move comes in response to growing concerns over irregularities reported during recent party activities.
According to the party, the revised rules also require polling station executives who wish to contest positions at the electoral area level to resign from their current roles before filing nominations.
Speaking to Citi News, the Deputy General Secretary, Haruna Mohammed, explained that the changes were necessary to restore confidence in the party’s internal electoral system.
He noted that the National Executive Committee (NEC) reviewed earlier provisions that allowed executives to remain in office while contesting, but concluded that stricter measures were needed to ensure a level playing field.
Haruna Mohammed revealed that some irregularities were observed during the recent registration exercise, including instances where party registers were deliberately withheld from certain members.
He described such actions as unacceptable and contrary to the party’s principles.
“In those particular circumstances, case by case, the party will suspend some of these disputed polling stations,” he stated.
As part of broader reforms, the party has established an ad-hoc committee chaired by former National Chairman Peter Mac Manu.
The committee is tasked with developing a comprehensive manual outlining the roles and responsibilities of party officers at all levels.
The NPP leadership believes these measures will help address concerns about fairness, prevent abuse of power, and enhance transparency in its internal elections.
The reforms are expected to play a key role in strengthening internal democracy within the party as it prepares for future political contests.
