The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced its decision to boycott the Electoral Commission’s (EC) directive for a parliamentary rerun in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency, citing a clear victory in the 2024 general elections.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, July 8, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong declared that the party would not participate in any rerun, insisting that its candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, won the election with a margin of 414 votes.
“For us in the New Patriotic Party, we are resolute. We know our candidate won based on facts and figures,” Kodua stated. “We will not go for any rerun. We have won the elections. What we are asking the Electoral Commission to do is to follow the court’s directive, complete the collation, and declare Akua Afriyie as MP for Ablekuma North.”
The EC’s decision to hold a rerun stems from identified irregularities during the collation process. According to the Commission, the results from 19 polling stations lacked validation from some presiding officers, necessitating a rerun to ensure electoral integrity.
However, the NPP maintains that all procedures were duly followed and that both party agents and EC officials had verified and signed the results at all affected polling stations.
Mr. Kodua described the EC’s move as unjust and accused the Commission of undermining the democratic will of Ablekuma North constituents. He called on the EC to uphold electoral fairness by concluding the collation process and declaring the rightful winner.
The dispute has escalated political tensions within the constituency, with the NPP warning that any further delay in declaring their candidate as MP constitutes a breach of the electoral mandate.
As of now, the Electoral Commission has not officially responded to the NPP’s demands.
