Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus and Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, has accused prominent members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) of deliberately engaging in illegal mining (galamsey) in a calculated effort to tarnish the image of President John Mahama and undermine his administration’s anti-galamsey initiatives.
Speaking during a media interaction, A-Plus claimed that the illegal activities of NPP figures across the country’s forest reserves and water bodies are part of a broader strategy to sabotage the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s efforts in fighting illegal mining.
“When they saw that the NDC had come to power, they decided to engage in galamsey to disgrace John Mahama,” he stated. “In the whole of Ghana, it is only NPP bigwigs who are involved in galamsey, and it is intentional — to create the impression that the GoldBod initiative is meant to promote illegal mining.”
The GoldBod initiative, launched under the current administration to regulate and formalize small-scale mining, has faced criticism in some quarters over its effectiveness in curbing environmental degradation caused by illegal miners.
