Vice President and NPP Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has outlined an ambitious plan to propel Ghana to Olympic success at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. Despite Ghana’s immense potential in sports, the nation has historically underperformed at the Olympics, securing only five medals in its history, with just one medal won during the 4th Republic at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago.
To address this, Dr. Bawumia has announced a comprehensive development initiative as part of his future government’s agenda, focusing on sustainable funding and targeted development programs for athletes.
Speaking at the NPP Manifesto launch in Takoradi on Sunday, Dr. Bawumia introduced the “Operation Olympics Glory” programme, which will dedicate resources towards the preparation and readiness of Ghanaian athletes for the 2028 Olympics.
As part of the initiative, the government will strategically focus on sports where Ghana has a strong chance of winning medals. Additionally, Dr. Bawumia unveiled plans for the establishment of a Ghana School Sports Secretariat. This new entity will be a special-purpose vehicle aimed at driving the sustainable development of grassroots sports through schools, in partnership with stakeholders such as the Ghana Education Service and various sports federations.
