The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Justin Kodua Frimpong, asserts the party’s commitment to resolving the parliamentary primary dispute in the Yendi constituency, following violent incidents during the ballot counting on January 27, 2024.
The Yendi constituency primary, a contest between incumbent MP Farouk Aliu Mahama and MASLOC CEO Hajia Abibata Shanni Mahama Zakariah, witnessed clashes prompting Mr. Frimpong to emphasize the necessity of resolving the matter, stating, “It has to be resolved, and it will be resolved.”
Speaking to Accra-based Asaase Radio, Frimpong explained that reports from the regional party, representatives, the Electoral Commission, and the Ghana Police would influence the decision-making process. He reassured that despite challenges, the party is determined to address the situation.
Frimpong highlighted the overall success of parliamentary primaries in areas with sitting MPs and affirmed the party’s duty to endorse decisions made by delegates nationwide.
Looking forward, he disclosed that the National Executive Committee would convene the following week to discuss constituencies where elections were suspended. Urging peace within the party, Frimpong emphasized the importance of unity in preparation for the upcoming December 7 general elections.
