The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has filed an interlocutory injunction in court to stop the Electoral Commission (EC) from conducting a rerun of the parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency.
Announcing the legal action on Sunday, July 6, 2025, the party’s National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, criticised the EC’s directive as unjust and lacking proper stakeholder consensus.
“We have filed an interlocutory injunction in court. The EC does not have the power to unilaterally rerun elections in selected polling stations. This move sets a dangerous precedent that could erode trust in our electoral system,” Mustapha said during an interview on Channel One Newsroom.
The EC’s decision stems from unresolved disputes following the December 7, 2024, general elections, particularly concerning unverified scanned pink sheets. Violence and vandalism at the Greater Accra Regional EC office also disrupted the collation process.
The elections featured Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie of the NPP and Ewurabena Aubynn of the NDC. Preliminary results showed Nana Akua with a slim lead of 414 votes. However, the NDC contested the results, alleging electoral fraud and destruction of materials.
The EC announced on July 2 that a rerun would be held on July 11 in 19 out of 281 polling stations. While the NDC welcomed the move, the NPP insists the EC’s action is unlawful and politically motivated.
The rerun is expected to be a tightly contested political showdown, with both parties ramping up campaign efforts as they await the court’s ruling.
