Richard Ahiagbah, the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has vowed to champion significant reforms in Ghana’s healthcare system following a life-threatening experience. Ahiagbah was involved in a severe accident on July 27, 2024, while en route to Kumasi for a party event. The accident occurred on the Kumasi-Accra highway near Aduapompo, leading to his hospitalization at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
After weeks of treatment, Ahiagbah was discharged on August 16, 2024. He expressed deep gratitude to the medical team at KATH, acknowledging their efforts in his recovery. In a heartfelt message on social media, he thanked the dedicated doctors and nurses who cared for him, specifically mentioning Dr. Charles K. Dally, Dr. Otu Boateng, Dr. Roland Azorliade, and Professor Peter Ambe, as well as the hospital’s leadership under Prof. Addai-Mensah.
Ahiagbah described the ordeal as a “frightening and painful” experience that exposed him to both the deficiencies and potential of Ghana’s healthcare system. Motivated by this experience, he announced plans to establish the Turning Point Foundation, aimed at advocating for a people-centered, outcome-driven health policy in Ghana.
“Fighting to hold on to dear life at KATH has been very frightening and painful,” Ahiagbah shared. “But through it all, I have learned firsthand the extreme deficiencies and prospects of Ghana’s healthcare delivery system. From this experience will arise a Turning Point Foundation to promote a people-centered, outcome-driven health policy regime in Ghana. May God bless and deliver us all from evil,” he added.
