NPP Chairman Locks Up School Over Unpaid Government Contract Fees

On Monday, students and teachers at Zangbalun RC Junior High School in the Kumbungu District of Ghana’s Northern Region found their school locked up, leaving them stranded. The closure was enforced by Issahaku Osman, the Zangbalun polling station chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who claimed that the local assembly owed him ¢69,400 for renovation work he completed in 2021.

Osman was contracted by the District Chief Executive after a severe rainstorm had damaged the school building. He began the renovation with his personal funds and later took a loan from Bonzali Rural Bank to complete the project, which included installing windows and painting. Despite the building being officially commissioned for use after the renovation, Osman has yet to receive payment from the assembly.

According to Osman, his business has since collapsed due to the lack of reimbursement. Locking the school, he explained, was a last resort to pressure the assembly into settling the debt after three years of waiting.
