In a significant development ahead of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries scheduled for November 4, 2023, the NPP and the Ghana Police Service have come together to establish a comprehensive security plan for the election. The NPP has granted full authority to the police service to manage security during this pivotal event.
During a constructive meeting that brought both parties together, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, who serves as the Chairman of the Presidential Election Committee for the NPP, emphasized the importance of maintaining law and order during the primaries. He stated, “We are authorizing you to take absolute control of all the processes that you regulate during normal elections in this republic. We have developed a set of guidelines, which have received unanimous consent, and we have crafted the operational dynamics in a manner that ensures our cooperation. We want to affirm that the rules and regulations signed by all the candidates will serve as the foundation of this process, and anyone who violates these regulations will face consequences. We aim to establish that our nation is one that upholds the rule of law.”
In response to this partnership, the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, urged cooperation to ensure the diligent execution of their duties. He assured the NPP that they will receive an “overdose of security” on November 4 and promised excellence and awesomeness in their efforts. He also stressed the importance of the NPP’s support to enable the police to effectively carry out their responsibilities.
Samuel Tetteh, the Deputy Commissioner responsible for Operations at the Electoral Commission, expressed their commitment to making adequate preparations for a smooth and successful election. Tetteh recognized the significance of these primaries not only for the NPP but also for the Electoral Commission and the entire nation. He emphasized that no effort would be spared to ensure the elections are conducted successfully, leaving no room for error.
The collaborative efforts between the NPP and the Ghana Police Service, along with the Electoral Commission’s dedication, are seen as essential steps in securing the integrity of the upcoming NPP presidential primaries, highlighting the commitment of all involved parties to uphold the rule of law and ensure a fair and peaceful electoral process.
