The Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference has urged the John Dramani Mahama-led government to reintroduce and expedite the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.
During a meeting on January 14, 2025, President Mahama proposed that a government-sponsored bill would ensure broader consultation and national consensus, making it more effective than the current Private Member’s bill. He also emphasized the need to revise school curriculums to include moral and cultural teachings that reflect Ghanaian and African values.
Most Reverend Matthew Gyamfi, President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, called on the government to prioritize the bill’s passage.
“What we want is that it is made into a law. That does not mean that it cannot be taught in schools if it is made into a law. Many of our laws are taught in schools through civic education and other things,” he stated.
He added that the overwhelming support for the bill from Ghanaians should not be undermined by technicalities or delays.
The proposed legislation aims to uphold Ghanaian cultural and moral values, with strong backing from various religious and traditional leaders across the country.
