The Northern Regional Police Command has apprehended 77 individuals during a special anti-drug operation in Tamale and Savelugu. Conducted by the Special Operations Team “Red Maria,” the raid occurred on Monday, March 23, 2026, at around 9:30 p.m., involving 33 police personnel.
The operation targeted known drug hotspots as part of ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking and associated crimes in the region. In Lamashegu, one suspect was arrested, followed by another apprehended at Aboabo Market in possession of a powdered substance suspected to be cocaine.
Intelligence led officers to NOBISCO, where a suspected supplier was detained; however, a search of his home yielded no incriminating evidence. The operation later extended to Savelugu, where a large raid at a known drug peddling location resulted in the arrest of 74 additional suspects.
Police recovered seven motorbikes, a Toyota Camry, quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, and 10 sachets of Tramadol. All suspects remain in police custody, assisting with investigations. Those found guilty will face court proceedings.
The Northern Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to combating drug-related crimes and ensuring public safety, while encouraging the public to provide timely and credible information to support ongoing efforts.
