NLC Set to Meet with Universities’ Senior Staff Association Amid Ongoing Strike

In a significant development, the National Labour Commission (NLC) is poised to engage with the leadership of the Senior Staff Association of Public Universities in Ghana (SSA-UoG) and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff (FUSSAG) today regarding the persistent strike that has gripped the nation’s public universities.

This crucial meeting comes in response to a summons by the NLC, aiming to address the contentious issues fueling the ongoing strike initiated by the unions last Wednesday. The primary concerns raised by the staff associations revolve around the government’s perceived neglect of issues related to pensions and the alleged improper cancellation of their overtime allowances.

The NLC, acting as a mediator, aims to facilitate dialogue between the unions and relevant stakeholders to seek resolutions and bring a swift end to the impasse. The Senior Staff Associations assert that their repeated appeals for the payment of two-tier pensions and overtime allowances have been met with disregard, prompting the workforce to resort to strike action.

The repercussions of the strike are being felt across various sectors, with essential services such as healthcare, administration, and security experiencing disruptions. Notably, the strike’s impact extends to final-year students, who require stringent supervision from senior technicians during crucial practical sessions.

The outcome of today’s meeting is highly anticipated as stakeholders hope for an amicable resolution that will restore normalcy to the affected universities and address the concerns raised by the striking staff associations.
