
A tragic boat accident on the Volta Lake has claimed the lives of nine people in the East Gonja District.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, along the busy Yeji–Congo transport route between Sikakope and Mataiko. The boat, which was carrying 14 passengers, reportedly capsized around 5:30 pm due to rough weather conditions.
Casualties and Survivors
Out of the 14 passengers on board, five men were rescued, while the nine victims included women and children, making the tragedy even more devastating for the affected communities.
Government Response
The Savannah Regional Minister, Salisu Be-Awuribe, confirmed the incident and expressed condolences to the bereaved families.
He noted that the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has been directed to move swiftly to the scene to assess the situation and provide relief support to affected families.
Ongoing Support Efforts
Authorities say efforts are underway to mobilise resources and provide assistance to those impacted by the disaster.
