The Ghana Police Service has detained nine individuals in connection with the burning of the Electoral Commission (EC) office in Ayensuano, Eastern Region.
The arson attack occurred during a protest on Monday, December 9, following the announcement of results from Ghana’s 2024 general elections. The facility, which housed electoral materials and devices used in the December 7 elections, was destroyed in the blaze.
Chief Inspector Priscilla Nkrumah Peprah confirmed the arrests and provided an update on the broader post-election security measures. “This arrest brings the total number of suspects detained in connection with post-election disturbances to 106. All are currently undergoing due legal processes,” she stated.
She reiterated the police’s commitment to ensuring public safety, emphasizing the ongoing efforts by security agencies to maintain law and order across the country.
The arson attack has drawn widespread condemnation, highlighting the need for restraint and adherence to legal channels in addressing electoral grievances. Further investigations into the incident are ongoing.
