The National Identification Authority (NIA) has disconnected the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) from its Identity Verification Service (IVS) platform due to an unpaid debt of over GH¢376 million.
According to the NIA, the move—effective Tuesday, August 5, 2025—was prompted by repeated failed efforts to get the GRA to settle the debt or agree to a payment plan.
The IVS is a key system used by both public and private institutions for real-time identity verification using data from the Ghana Card. The disconnection has raised concerns about disruptions to services that rely on the platform for authentication.
Speaking on Eyewitness News, NIA’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Williams Ampomah Darlas, expressed frustration, noting that the Authority had written to GRA several times and even escalated the matter to Parliament, but received no response. A final warning was issued on July 29, but with no action from GRA, the NIA proceeded to block access.
Mr. Darlas further revealed that institutions like the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the Lands Commission, and Hubtel have been accessing NIA data through the GRA without authorization—violating data-sharing laws.
He emphasized that while the NIA understands the impact of the disconnection, it had no choice, as the ongoing non-compliance is undermining its operations.
The Authority is now calling for urgent intervention to safeguard the sustainability of the country’s identity verification system.
