The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has released GH₵200 million to health facilities across the country as part of its claims payment process, coinciding with the launch of the free dialysis treatment program, which began on December 1, 2024.
This payment is part of the NHIA’s new payment regime introduced earlier this year, which has helped maintain a debt-free status for 2024 and ensured that healthcare providers are reimbursed in a timely manner. In total, the NHIA has disbursed GH₵1 billion in the last two months, reflecting its ongoing commitment to supporting healthcare providers and ensuring the sustainability of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
Dr. DaCosta Aboagye, Chief Executive Officer of the NHIA, confirmed the disbursement in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, specifying that it covered claims for September and October 2024. He reassured Ghanaians that there are no outstanding claims and highlighted that the NHIA is fully prepared for the successful implementation of the free dialysis program.
Dr. Aboagye explained, “We have no outstanding claims to settle. We’ve asked the facilities to submit their claims, as we have the funds available. NHIS is functioning optimally.” He further noted that the scheme’s budget has grown steadily, increasing by GH₵2 million annually since 2017. For 2024, the NHIA’s budget stands at GH₵6.8 billion, with half allocated for claims. Despite having already paid over GH₵2 billion in claims this year, Dr. Aboagye emphasized that there are still available funds, urging health facilities to submit their claims.
