NE/R: GIS Officer Killed, Another Injured in Armed Attack at Gbintri Checkpoint

An officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has been killed, and another seriously injured, following an armed attack at the Gbintri inland checkpoint in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region.

The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Friday, October 3, 2025, when unidentified gunmen opened fire on officers manning the checkpoint.

Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICOII) Rafiq Mohammed was shot dead instantly, while his colleague, AICOII Oppong Daniel, sustained severe injuries to his jaw and back. He is currently receiving treatment at the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu.

Police investigators who arrived at the scene recovered AK-47 shell casings along with a GIS service rifle, identified as GH/GIS/HQACN 668516-1646.

A joint security team, led by Superintendent Francis Brobbey, Gambaga Municipal Police Commander, and DIS Moro Tanko Mohammed, North Regional Intelligence Officer of the GIS, was immediately dispatched to the area.

Authorities say investigations are underway to establish the circumstances of the attack and apprehend the perpetrators. Updates will be provided as inquiries progress.
