- The NDC, the largest opposition party, has called upon the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to intervene and oversee the actions of the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC). They accuse the Electoral Commissioner, Jean Adukwei Mensah, of engaging in voter suppression by conducting the Limited Voter Registration Exercise in the country’s District Offices.
During a press conference, Johnson Aseidu Nketia, the National Chairman of the NDC, urged the regional bloc to take proactive measures in safeguarding Ghana’s democracy. Nketia also pointed out that the ongoing limited voter registration exercise, which began on September 12, 2023, has been marred by numerous irregularities, especially in areas where the NDC has strong support.
According to Nketia, the commission’s decision to limit voter registration to its district offices not only has the potential to suppress registration and voting but also raises concerns about possible gerrymandering, making it challenging for political party agents to contest individuals who may be transported from one constituency to another for registration.
Furthermore, Nketia noted that aside from the NDC, four other political parties are plaintiffs in a case before the Supreme Court, and the PNC has also expressed support for the lawsuit.
